Any Parents With Experience On Babies With Terrible Reflux?

My baby has a terrible reflux. She is already on thickened formula and Prevacid. But Prevacid doesn’t seemed to work. My baby is in constant pain whenever she feeds usually after she had her first burp. Most of the time she wont finished her milk because of this. Just wanna get ideas from parents with similar situation. What medicines were given or any one had combination treatment for reflux on their babies? Help!!!!!!!!

  1. My son has reflux, and we had to swtich to soy formula and put him on Prevacid. We started him on Zantac and that didn’t make a difference at all. Then we put him on Prevacid and it helped a little but not much, so the doctor upped his dose of Prevacid. Right now he gets a liquid form of Prevacid, I heard that there’s a tablet or something but we don’t have that. He gets 2.5 mils 2x a day, and the strength of the Prevacid is 2.5mg/mil. We had to put him on soy too, and that is the only combination that worked. Once we got the Prevacid we tried putting him back on a milk based formula and he started having a real hard time again. We tried the thickened formula too but it didn’t make a difference at all.
I really recommend soy based formula if nothing else is working, I know a couple of other people with reflux babies and soy made a big difference for them too.
I know it’s hard to watch your baby go through that and I hope you find something that works!
Why the thumbs downs? The question asked what how you treated your baby’s reflux and I answered how we treated mine? Last time I checked my son is VERY healthy and hasn’t had a problem with his reflux since we did this.
It’s probably because I’m not breastfeeding right? OMG someone is using formula…BTW my son’s reflux was so bad that he couldn’t even handle breastmilk, one of the reasons I didn’t BF.

  2. When my kids were little one had reflux, just not that bad, Ive known some with it that bad though… have they done a study of her digestive tract at all? there is some test they can do with dye to see if it is just reflux, or there are other things where the stomach cannot keep it down and there are sugerical things that need to be done to repair the issues… sorry I forget what its called but Ive known people whos babies had this issue, try to get her to a specialist and get a few tests ran to see if there is anything else that can be done for it

  3. my 8 week old has been on Zantac 4x day for 3 weeks now. He cried all the time. It has helped quite a bit with his discomfort. He still spits up all the time but I can deal with that as long as he isnt in pain anymore.
I have another son whos currently 20 months. he spit up until close to his 1st birthday but he never acted like it bother him to spit up.

Jaxon has reflux/GERD, but now that I read your details I don’t think it is as bad. He take Zantac 25 (efferdose) 2 times a day or less. I also use the Dr. Brown’s bottles to avoid extra air in his tummy.

  5. We had to give my baby Zantac and then when that didn’t work too well we moved on to Prilosec and that’s worked great. He got on that when he was 7 weeks old and is still on it at 3 yrs.

  6. My daughter had such severe reflux that she stopped gaining weight because of it.
The doctor put her on Reglan and Zantac. The Zantac helps to reduce the acid, therefore reducing the pain when it comes up. It helped a little as far as the crying goes, but not much.
The Reglan did nothing but make my daughter shake all the time. It was scary and I took her off of it. Her pediatrician also suggested starting solids at 4 months due to the reflux but that didn’t help either, it just made her spit up in different colors, so I stopped the solids too.
I saw a specialist (pediatric gastro doctor) and he suggested Prevacid instead of Zantac, but she cried all day when I gave her the first dose. I think it made her head hurt, so I stopped that.
What helped her was the Zantac as needed, and waking her up in the night to feed. When she nursed in the night and went right back to sleep, more of the milk stayed down and she began gaining weight again.
We dealt with horrible reflux until she outgrew it around 8 months old.
If I were you, here is what I would do. I would ditch the formula and relactate as soon as possible for four reasons. One, it’s digested quicker, which means less time to spit it up.
Two, since it’s digested quicker, more will actually be digested, helping with weight gain.
Three, breastmilk is soothing to the babies irritated esophagus.
And four, breastmilk coming back up into the esophagus is a lot less irritating than formula.
Regarding the Prevacid…it’s not supposed to actually help with the reflux itself. It’s supposed to reduce acid in the stomach so that when milk comes back up, it has less stomach acid in it so it doesn’t burn as much. It doesn’t actually stop the spitting up/reflux at all.
So what I would do is relactate, and then talk to your doctor about trying a different acid reducer (Zantac is one). Since it’s a baby, you never know if the baby is crying just because of the reflux or also because of a side effect of the medication. One of Prevacid’s side effects is headache, so it’s worth trying other ones.
When you feed her, whether it is breastmilk or formula, try to feed her in the most upright position that you can, and keep her in an upright position after feeding. Also, if you can, try to feed right before naps or bedtime. The more active the child is after a feeding, the more likely they will spit up.
You might also want to look into a crib wedge. It slightly elevates one end of the mattress so the baby isn’t completely flat in her crib.
