Can My Infant Be Addicted To Percocet While I’m Taking It And Breastfeeding?
I had a c-section 1 wk ago and am taking percocet perscribed by my physician. I’m having an aweful time breastfeeding because the baby is so lathargic and always falls asleep and I have to keep stimulating her and sometimes that doesn’t work. She also seems to always want my breast when I know she has to be full! I’m almost wondering if it’s because I’m still taking the percocet. Anyone have experience with this?
I’m not certain, but I believe percocet is one of the few drugs that don’t actually get secreted through breast milk. I know doctors prescribe percocet to pretty much all women who have had babies and are nursing…c-section and vaginally.
Your baby is more than likely falling asleep on the breast because she’s a week old. Newborns are big sleepers! My little girl(who is now 5 months) was always falling asleep and not latching on properly at 1 week. I swear, the girl slept close to 20 hours a day!
The reason she wants your breast is most likely for comfort. She spent 9 months growing in you and just wants to be close to you. Enjoy this time now, because they grow so fast! I’m sure your baby is not addicted to percocet! Congrats!
She is feeding all the time because that’s what a newborn does.. For the first couple months its all about eating and sleeping and well pooping, but those are the main things and it is normal to nurse constantly for the first 6 weeks…As long as you are taking the medication as directed your baby will not be addicted..if you want to try something else for the pain..some tylenol would be fine..take as directed of course…
CONGRATS!!!!
Do NOT offer a passy..and your breast is never empty..it may seem like it but your breast is never empty…http://www.llli.org/FAQ/cesarean.htmlhttp://www.llli.org/FAQ/frequency.html
percocet is fine while breastfeeding don’t worry, especially if they told you it was ok, and it could help to squeeze your breast a little when your baby starts dozing off, it makes your milk flow a little faster to wake them up, just until they get older and can stay awake lol…. and babies have the need to suck so make sure you don’t over feed, once she comes off the breast full, then give her a pacifier or an empty breast to suck on, thats what I do. Good Luck!
I am prescribed Percocet for a fall I sustained while pregnant. My baby is 4 months old and has never showed any signs of side effects from taking the medication. I only take it though when I really have to. Your OB would not prescribe anything that would harm you or your baby, so try not to worry. Congratulations and all the best-
as long as you take it as directed by your doc that realizes you are bf ing then you should be fine…are you sure it is lethargy? or just regular nb sleeping? if you think baby is lethargic, call your doc…or if you are really concerned…but it would be irresponsible of the doc to give you something if he had any reservations about it…..gl
if you just take as directed, addiction should NOT be a problem…
