It varies from state to stat and may depend on the method of adoption.
For example in Oregon you CAN adopt as a single parent but if you are married it needs to be longer then 2 years for foster child adoptions.

Yes, in some States in the US I believe you do need to be married in order to adopt, especially through foster care. Also, adoption agencies can and do sometimes set their own rules based upon any religious affiliation they may have or even their personal preferences. There are also countries in which you must be married before you can do an international adoption from those countries.
Arkansas prohibits unmarried couples (both same sex and opposite sex) from adopting or fostering children and I believe there are other special circumstance examples as well (but I need to leave to go out and can’t dig further)

most adoption agencies requires you to be married a minimum of 3 yrs or a single women, but you may be able to find one that is different. I am trying to adopt now, all the ones I checked into said this. Good luck

But some international countries do not accept single parent adoption.
