Do Babies Typically Practice Their Milestones While Sleeping?

My 6 month old is babbling, moving around in her crib at night while sleeping. She is so restless and cries and awakens much more at night. I think that she will be starting to crawl soon, as she does a commando crawl and rocks on her hands and knees during the day. Are these linked?

  1. Sleep often becomes very active or disturbed (or very heavy) right before a new milestone is reached. Rocking back and forth on hands and knees and commando creeping are signs crawling is very soon on it’s way, I’m going out on a limb here and I am going to say about 6 days from now, she will be crawling.
There is a difference between creeping and crawling, and creeping happens first, this including moving like crawling on hands and knees (or elbows) with tummy still on the ground.
You also might notice she will begin to ‘bridge’, this is another pre-requiste to crawling. Bridging is when a baby straightens her legs and keeps hands on the floor (looks like a child playing london bridge, bum in the air). This is strengthening the muscles in preparation for crawling.
Best of luck and get the video camera out and charge those batteries!

  2. Infants dream and muscle twitches help develop growing bodies.
    It is definately related.

  3. Yep. Perfectly normal. In fact, babies often get less sleep when they’re ready to meet a new milestone, because they’re so busy practicing their new skill!
Once she figures it out, she’ll probably sleep better.

  4. They sure do. My son is a night “talker”. He just started saying “ball”, and a few times I’ve heard him wake in the middle of the night, say ball, then go back to sleep. It’s very cute.
It may get worse before it gets better, but like all things baby related, this too shall pass.
