Does Medicaid Pay For An Infant’s Circumcision?

Medicaid covered my son’s circumcision. However, you may want to look at your coverage information or call your local/state medicaid office to find out.
And for those of you giving her crap, get over yourselves. I don’t think it’s a necessary procedure and agree that it’s overused in the US, but this is none of your damn business.

    Absolutly not.
Does medicaid pay for a nose job?
Insurance doesn’t pay for things that don’t have any medical benifits.
    -Connor

  2. In Arizona, California, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah and Washington the procedure is NOT covered.
By the way The AAP and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) do not endorse the procedure as a way to prevent any of the medical conditions mentioned previously. The AAP also does not find sufficient evidence to medically recommend circumcision or argue against it.
Lots of regular insurance companies will not cover it either, as it’s considered a cosmetic surgery. Please look more into it before you make a decision.

  3. Ignore the naggy nannies that answered your question. The question isn’t whether or not you should circumcise your child, but what of the costs and coverage.
Medicaid coverage varies from state to state, however most will cover the procedure in hospital by a doctor. However, there are a few states that will cover it based on religious reasons (for instance, Jewish people typically require a Mohel to perform the procedure).
The best thing to do in your situation is to contact your local social services office to verify whats covered. Alternatively, you might have better luck talking to the hospitals social worker.

  4. Medicaid does NOT cover circumcision in 16 states. They are- Arizona, California, Florida, Idaho, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.
    Here’s a map- http://www.icgi.org/Medicaid_Project/ind…
I would recommend NOT circumcising your son. The benefits do not outweigh the risks. One analysis found that for every 9 boys who might be spared a UTI by circumcision, another 12 boys at the least (the upper estimate was 40 boys) will experience severe complications from the circumcision. Thats great if your boy is one of the 9, but horrible if he’s one of the 12. UTIs can be treated by antibiotics quite effectively. Botched circumcisions are much more difficult to fix. Its also worth noting that 99% of intact boys will never get an infection, compared to 99.9% of cut boys. That means you would have to cut 100 boys to save just one of them from infection. Thats 99 boys cut for no reason at all. Out of every 1000 boys who are cut, one will contract a UTI anyway.
Only 50% of boys nationwide are circumcised. Girls of your son’s generation will likely have an entirely different view of circumcision as girls from yours. Just because you think intact is “gross” and “unsanitary” does not mean the women of your son’s generation will. after all, think of all the differences between you and your parents. Did you know that when your grandparents were young, circumcision was very uncommon?
Next, it is VERY painful to an infant. Most doctors still don’t use any anesthesia, those that do rarely offer adequate anesthesia because the only stuff that works is not safe enough to use in infants for such a “minor” procedure. Further, some of the pain meds offered to infants aren’t even recommended for use on babies! Some doctors argue that it has been done “for thousands of years” without anesthetic- what they neglect to tell you is that a medical circumcision can take over 15 minutes to complete. A Jewish ritual circumcision, by contrast, takes under 60 seconds to complete (and the baby is given wine) Here is some info on the pain…..http://www.cirp.org/library/pain/http://www.circumcision.org/response.htmhttp://www.cirp.org/library/pain/taddio2… (note in this one that even infants offered pain meds for the procedure showed signs of post traumatic stress!)
You should also know that studies have shown that the most sensitive parts of the male anatomy of ON the foreskin- NOT the head of the penis. By cutting off the foreskin, you remove a mans most erogenous genital tissue. Here is a study about that…. (note that other studies found no difference, but they neglected to test the sensitivity of the foreskin- they only tested the glans penis of intact and cut men and didn’t pay any attention to the foreskin at all) http://www.nocirc.org/touch-test/touchte…
You should know that infant boys are EASIER to care for when they are intact. The foreskin does not retract until late childhood or even puberty, so you do nothing special, just wipe the outside of his penis clean and leave it alone. Furthermore, to prevent painful and bleeding erections later in life, doctors are now commonly leaving more skin behind- in a cut boy this means you may have to push the left over skin back at every diaper change and clean beneath it to prevent it from adhering or infecting. The very thing that mother’s think they avoid by circumcising! In short- Intact = wipe like a finger, NEVER retract Cut= vaseline, clean thoroughly, push back remaining skin to prevent adhesions etc (the last step perhaps for several months or years)
Here is an excellent tutorial on the basics of intact care and circumcision….http://www.lactivistintactivist.com/?pag…
Another factor in your decision is that circumcised boys experience a 12% increase in their risk of MRSA infection. MRSA is commonly picked up in hospitals (where circumcision is performed in non-sterile conditions) and has been known to kill adults. I wouldn’t want to deal with it in an infant. 12% is a BIG risk, the risk of a boy “needing” a circ later in life is WELL below that- under 1%. http://www.nocirc.org/publish/12-Answers…
The so called “benefits” of circumcision are generally trumped up. A big one now is that it “prevents” AIDS. All the studies showing “benefits” like this have been poorly designed and inconclusive. Also, for every study that finds a “benefit” there are more studies that find no benefit. http://www.icgi.org/
It is rather eye-opening to see how circumcision first became popular in the US to begin with. It was virtually unknown in this country until the 20th century. This slide show takes you through the rise of circumcision…. http://youtube.com/watch?v=f4unKTMpBGA
Finally, you should watch a video or two of the procedure so you are fully informed of what your infant will go through. I will warn you that these are graphic. If you can’t handle watching them as an adult, why would you expect your infant son to endure them?

  5. If your pregnant right now, Yes, Medicaid pays for your hospital bill, your delivery, circumcision, or anything else that you and your baby may need, even getting your tubes tied after you give birth. But you’ve got to tell your doctor before you give birth that you want this extra procedure done.

  6. Growing Xandan Wyatt,
I heard only if you have it done the same day he is born. I dont know about nowadays, however. You can call them to see. Most women are going to want their baby boys circumsized, so I would definitely either call your insurance company or the hospital’s pediatric department to see in the “maternal ward” of the hospital. Or billing at the hospital you will be having your baby at. That’s what their there for. To answer phones, do billing and other inquiries. Congratulations are in order here! Good Luck to you with your new baby boy. Hope he brings you as much joy as my two grown boys brought me! Smile!!

  7. It certainly shouldn’t pay for genital mutilation!
It won’t pay for female circumcision, which is illegal, and the fact that male circumcision of minors is legal and female isn’t is highly sexist and unconstitutional, as such.
And for those who say that it prevents infection, circumcision makes males more prone to bacterial and viral infections. The foreskin of the male has Langerhans cells, which have been proven to have antiviral and antibacterial properties.
The HIV rate of the US is much higher than that of the countries that don’t habitually mutilate infant males by circumcision. That’s a proven fact.
Pakistan, for example, has an HIV rate FOUR TIMES that of India.
In Pakistan, probably more than 90% of males have been circumcised, while the millions of Hindus in India have unmutilated penises.
Obviously, the so-called research in which doctors who belong to the religions that try to impose circumcision on all males has been flawed by their bias. They try to justify the unjustifiable.
Doctors never disclose the adverse effects and complications from circumcision and in fact suppress them. They make money from circumcision and don’t want to discourage anyone from mutilating their helpless infant sons.
Very few males choose circumcision as adults, and most men would prefer to remain whole.
The silly old wives’ tales and deliberate lies have been disproven, but those who parrot the old garbage “it’s cleaner,” or “it prevents infection” have never even seen an intact foreskin.
80% of the men in the world are intact. I never heard of a foreskin killing anyone, but I’ve heard of hundreds of cases where circumcision has killed.
Of course I’m biased, as I freely admit, having been a victim of male genital mutilation against my will as an infant, and suffering complications that resulted in more than the usual loss of sexual sensitivity (another thing doctors never discuss).
I’m restoring my foreskin, and can attest that it is so incredibly much better with a foreskin; the way that nature intended.
Circumcision is the worst hoax ever perpetrated on the male sex.
A foreskin is not a birth defect; it is a birthright.
    ERIC

  8. Have you thought about leaving the decision up to him?
I chose NOT to have my son circumcised. It is not medically necessary, and the very few UTI’s that it prevents are negated by the rate of complications. People say that it is easier to clean, but that is NOT the case! With an natural penis, you just wipe like a finger, but with a circumcised one, you have to have gauze, Vaseline, push back skin to prevent adhesion’s, and think about it… a fresh wound being soaked in urine and feces all day?!?!?!?!?!?!
The main reason you hear about boys needing to get circumcised at 3 or 4 is because of misinformation. Some old school doctors and nurses tell you that you have to forcibly retract the foreskin and clean under it every diaper change. not only is that not true, it is dangerous! At birth, and sometimes until puberty, the foreskin is attatched to the head of the penis like your fingernail is to your finger. It is NOT supposed to be retracted. It is like this in order to keep the head of the enis protected from urine and feces. Around the time a boy is potty trained, most boys are retractable. (you can pull the foreskin back) is this a coincidence? NO!!! There is no need to clean under the foreskin before it can be retracted because nothing can get under it. Do we need to clean under our fingernails? (the part that is actually attatched) no, because there is nothing to clean.
It is becoming less common is America (I don’t know where you are?) The circ rate here is only 56% these days so this generation will have an entirely different veiw of circumcision. So the locker room thing just wont hold up. Even if he does get made fun of for it, is it not our job as parents to build a healthy body image? If your daughter got made fun of for having small breast, would you immediately get her a breast augmentation? What are they making fun of anyway? At least he has a whole penis….
Looking like daddy, now this one makes me laugh! Ah, the ignorance of this statement! Since when do toddler boys look even remotely close to a grown man? What are you gonna tell him when he asks like he doesn’t look like mommy or sissy??? And since when do teenagers compare penises with their father? This argument makes NO sense!!!
Your son can stay STD free with the use of a condom (which he should be using regardless of his circ status!) and still have his foreskin.
The foreskin is not just a useless flap of skin, it is a vital structure of the penis. http://www.sexasnatureintendedit.com/
If people are so worried about infections, HIV, and Cancer, the why why don’t we give all baby girls routine mastectomies? That would eradicate breast cancer, which kills thousands every year, and is MUCH MUCH more common in the developed world than infections of the foreskin, penile cancer, and HIV put together!
The real kicker for me though, was the fact that I believe that we own our own bodies. Who am I to make that decision for my son. It is HIS penis, so it is HIS decisionhttp://www.naturalfamilyonline.com/5-bc/…http://www.sexasnatureintendedit.com/http://www.glorialemay.com/blog/?p=57http://www.noharmm.org/mothering.htmhttp://childbirth.amuchbetterway.com/sev…http://viewofcircumcision.blogspot.com/http://www.healthcentral.com/drdean/408/…http://www.healthcentral.com/drdean/408/…

  9. If depends on which state & which health plan you put him under. A few cover it until a year, but most only cover it up to 2-3 months.
Just so you know circumcision isn’t necessary for health or cleanliness reasons.
My husband & sons aren’t circumcised and they have never had any problems.

  10. NO, your infant son does, for the rest of his life! Please re-consider this decision. There is no medical reason, and no good reason to have your son circumcised. Please let him make the decision for his own body when he is old enough.
You will have grown a perfect baby in your womb. Why would you want to cut parts off of him,…especially for no reason.
It is his body, and he will feel all the pain.

  11. They did not pay for my sons. It was because it was an elective procedure. It was $250 & we felt it was well worth it to keep infection away! This was our reasoning, I see some who already have disagreed w/ your decision. Remember to do whats right for your family. The sooner its done the least painful it is as well. Good luck!

  12. I had Medicaid with GHI insurance (that is how they ran it in my county in NY) and yes they did pay for it. I heard some places do not so you might want to check. I saw on the bill that it was billed for $275 to the insurance company.

  13. medicaid in new york does cover it , however, my doctor didnt inform me that they dont accept it for the procedure, so i have to now pay the $668 bill myself.

  14. *NiChOle & cOrEy jR'S mOmMy* on February 11th, 2010 at 8:23 pm

Only in some states, it’s all done by state so you’d have to check for your state. It isn’t covered by a lot of insurances because it’s unnecessary.
    Harriet

  15. Ignore some of the people on here. It is your child, not theirs.
Back to your question, it completely depends on the state you live in. Talk to your insurance company to see if they cover it.

  16. trayce's mommy [melody] on February 12th, 2010 at 12:01 am

Ask your doctor because it varies from state to state…I live in California and they did not cover it…I had to pay $250.

  17. Chase has my ♥ on February 12th, 2010 at 6:08 am

Medicaid paid for my son’s, but it might vary by state. Don’t worry about others opinions on this subject.. let them worry about their children and you just focus on yours!

  18. Liam's Momma 01.15.09 on February 12th, 2010 at 1:05 pm

I know you asked about circumcision a few weeks ago. It looks like you’ve decided to do it, which is disappointing. I’m surprised that given all the facts and resources you’ve still opted for it, rather than leaving him intact and just educating him when he’s older about good hygiene.
Medicaid does not cover circumcision in several states. It depends where you live. The map below shows where Medicaid funds and does not fund circumcision.

  19. Yes it does

  20. I had my son in 07′ and yes they paid for it.

  21. Cameron & Kaelynn's Mommy on February 12th, 2010 at 3:11 pm

those people are really annoying….. and i live in california and they did NOT pay for it…. i paid the pediatrician that did it 201.00 and the hospital 108.00odd numbers i know… and to all the nimrods… there are ups and downs with every decision in life that you make so shut it unless you have done research on circumcision like most of the Mommy’s that chose to hae it done!
OH AND MY SON DID NOT EVEN CRY WHEN HE GOT IT DONE…..
good luck to you and your new baby

  22. ♥Mayson's Ma♥ on February 12th, 2010 at 7:04 pm

Why would you even WANT to consider putting a baby through that suffering? And besides, circumcision removes at least half of the sensitive nerve endings of the skin of the penis, and circumcision really has no medical benefit. Really.

  23. What a sad question.
It is unfortunate if a child begins his life already on the government’s dole. I don’t know the answer – it would depend on the state’s rules and regulations.

  24. mine paid for my son’s circumsicion.
and dude whou called her shelfish it isnt shelfish its good hygene do you know how gross a uncircumsied winky can get if not taken care of and especially since your son cant clean it by himself till his like 8 or 9

  25. Why would you want to put your child through so much pain, just for your selfish reasons?
My boyfriend is not circumcised, and he has never had an infection on his penis due to the extra skin. Maybe the people who get infections need to wash their junk better, and the parents of the babies who get them need to take better care of their child.
    Learn to spell, Jessica.

  26. i dnt think they cuz around the year 2000 they considered it a want
