How Can I Keep My Baby Cool In This Hot Weather?

I’m going to take my infant daughter for the summer to stay with my family in Israel. I grew up in a city in southern Israel called Eilat that gets very hot, the house has air conditioning of course but when we go out with her in the city what should I do to make sure she doesn’t get too hot (aside from using sun block) any other tips? It gets above 120 degrees F in the summer.

  1. Important info on using sunscreen for babies:
    http://parenting.ivillage.com/baby/bsafety/0,,3q6f,00.html
Most skin damage including cancer is done during the two growth spurts that a child goes through, in early adolescence and later in their teens. You could be setting your child up for skin cancer if he/she is exposed at an early age to a lot of sun.
All references suggest making sure the baby gets shade, so I’d figure a cotton brim hat with a large enough brim to cover the ears and face if possible. I’d suggest cotton so you can wet it with water and the evaporation will act as an evaporative cooler. You don’t want the child to be drenched in water but a dab of water either on their cotton shirt or on their hat(where a lot of blood vessels are) will help to keep their core temp down. In a dry climate like Israel, using water with cotton clothes is an excellent way to keep cool for you and your child. When I was growing up in Arizona, the best defense against the sun when hiking was to use white cotton long sleeve tshirts, this way the sweat would be picked up by the clothes before it fell off my arms and as it evaporates it keeps you cool. Also, it acted as a reliable sunscreen – sometimes sun lotion will sweat off or rub off. All experienced construction workers used long sleeve cotton white tshirts there. Sometimes, in 100+degree heat I’d shiver after a minute if I doused myself with warm canteen water due to the evaporative cooling effect.

  2. buy some of those battery operated fans..they are small and use 2 AA batteries…we spend some time at the ballpark and other places and they are fantastic…they sell larger ones with squirt bottles to spray on you they are great also…they sell these at walmart for very cheap…the small ones you hold in your hand they are about half the size of a coke can hope this helps

Put her fruit purees in the freezer until its turned into a slushy type consistency! Its a great treat for when temps are just way to high. You could freeze them solid and put them in a a cooler and let it dethaw slowly and you could even feed them to her when your out and about!

  4. keep her shaded with a white sheet or blanky. and try to limit your time in the heat. most importantly keep the baby hydrated.
alternative….get an igloo cooler, ice, and blankets…you can carry the baby and a few cold ones at the same time!!!

  5. You can try to pour water on her or have ice to rub on her skin. Also dont’ wear that much clothes!!!!! After that you can go swimming or play in the sprinklers or have a nice bath. Enjoy your time in Israel@!@!! :)
    P.S hope this helps!
