Prune juice. Dilute it with water a little bit, and only give him about half an ounce at first.
Works like a charm.
Hi there! My little one had problems when he was younger, too. My Pedi recommended prune juice and that’s what I did. I always put a little in one of his formula bottles once a day and it regulated him. Once he started on solids, we didn’t use the prune juice too much any more.
both my twin girls were constipated alot. their ped. put them on simulac alementum formula, Its in a purple can. that really helped my girls. it costs between 25 to 36 a can but it works
Yeah, I tried apple or prune juice with my son, next thing you know: BIG blow out!! Either that or try a little water. (usually about as much as they will drink should be enough, but just in case give him no more than a half ounce.)
Put a baby size glycerine suppository in her – or insert a small nugget of plain soap (lubricated!) as a suppository. Either one should make her do a dooey in 5-20 minutes.
I would consider changing his formula. It’s not normal for a new baby to be constipated. It could be that he’s having a hard time (no pun intended) with cows milk or soy or what he is taking.
I used Nutramigen (hypoallergenic) and my kids never had any problems. family members have used it too and never have I heard of a baby not tolerating it. It’s available through WIC too with a doctor’s prescription.
Is he breastfed or bottlefed? If breastfed, it’s okay for him to go up to a week without pooping. The breastmilk is so digestible there isn’t much left to poop out. If the baby is formula fed, he needs to be going more often.
Can you call your pediatrician? If not, maybe a county health nurse could help.
If not, glycerine suppositories help and so do probiotics.
Try giving him an ounce or two of water. This always seems to help my son.
I agree with the karo syrup just a little since he is so young u can put it in his milk and it shouldnt take long for it to come out. I used this with all three of my kids. I hope he feels better soon.
My youngest son was very constipated as an infant and started on a tiny bit of prune juice in his formula at a couple of weeks old. He was also on baby food fruits then, too. He is nine now and suffered no ill effects from what I did to help him out.
a little mineral oil in his bottle will help him …
You can either add a little prune juice to his formula or dilute with water.
give him/her 1 teaspoon of mineral oil by mouth daily. that will keep the baby regular. and with no sugar or dyes or anything. just plain mineral oil. I put it in 1 bottle daily & mixed it well with the formula. worked like a charm.
if the baby is already constipated you could increase the amount of mineral oil for 1 day to like 2tsp. or you could give him/her 2oz of straight prune juice. I wouldn’t recommend the prune juice for regular use, but on occasion it’s ok. you can also put vasoline on the tip of a thermometor & insert it in the baby’s rectum. it stimulates a BM.
all of these suggestions are pediatrician approved (at least by the ones at the clinic I go to).
Good Luck!
**add** I wouldn’t recommend changing the formula based on constipation alone. most babies who are fomula fed experience constipation (see all the ?’s here about it). its due to the iron in the formula, which is essential for babies growth & is in all the regular infant formulas. I had to put my son on Nutramigen due to his allergy to milk, but he didn’t have constipation. he just cried all the time.
