How Long Can My Son Stay In The Rear Facing Stage One Infant Car Seat?

His feet hit the back seat, but he’s not quite 20 lbs. He’s 19 and 6 ounces. I read somewhere that it’s fine if their feet hit the back seat, as long as their head doesn’t go up over the top of it. I’ve put him in his convertible car seat, but he doesn’t like it, and doesn’t seem to hold his head up very well. I’m just wondering how long I can use the stage 1, and him still be as safe as possible. Any information would help, Thanks!

  1. you absloutly right it is fine for his feet to hit the back seat, as long as his head isnt go over the top! keep him in reward facing for as long as possible as this is safest, definatly dont use 2nd stage if hes not great at holding head up.

  2. he can stay in his infant seat until he is 20 pounds. if he is not yet a year old by then he needs to be in a rear facing convertable seat until at the very minimum of 1 year. (to be forward facing he must be 1 year old AND 20 lbs.) you said that in the convertible car seat he doesnt hold his head up very well, you can put a rolled up towel around his head to support it. i would personally recommend that he be rear facing for more than a year, it is approx. 7 times safer if you get into a crash.

  3. Sorry but the bad news is that your son should stay in the rear facing seat for longer than you had hoped.
Clinc on the link below to see what the Brits have learned.
    Sucks, don’t it!

  4. Your son has to meet BOTH height and weight restrictions. So if your manual says for example, 26 pounds and 29 inches, your son would have to be both under 26 pounds AND shorter than 29 inches for him to ride safely in the rear facing carseat.

yeah as long as his head doesnt go over the top he’s fine..
my son’s head went over the top of the carseat at 4 months so he went in the 2nd stage carseat facing the rear of the car.
    its normally 20/22lbs though.

There should be weight and height restrictions on the seat or check the website. Generally, though, it’s 22 lbs. and 28 and a half inches.

  7. keep him in until he just doesnt fit. i think its upto roughly 9 months or a year old. dont worry about guidelines u know what is best for ur baby

  8. Check the height and weight limits for the seat.
