I Need Help Quick! Signs Of An Allergic Reaction In An Infant!? I’m Not Sure What To Do?

My son is 5 months old & he just tried Peaches for the first time today. He’s had all kinds of solids & has never shown any symptoms of a reaction, but now he has diarrehea(sp?) & little bumps all over his body…What are the typical symptoms of an allergic reaction & what can I do about it? At what point do I bring him to the hospital? Are allergies to fruits like peaches common?
(he’s already had: prunes, green beans, carrots, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice cereal & oatmeal)
Before I get the answers that I shouldn’t feed him solids until 6 months, I’ve heard it before & I got the go ahead from his pediatrician, so please just help me with my situation now & not what I should have done. Thanks in advance

  1. I would take him now to a doctor.
The welfare of a child, is not found on the internent.
It could be minor to MAJOR

  2. Call his pediatrician…it could get worse…and don’t pay attention to Alex – that was a stupid *** comment.

  3. If you are in fear of any sort of allergic reaction, call the emergency room and a nurse can let you know. By no means wait. The most important thing is that he is not swelling or that his breathing is labored. Call someone now.

  4. take himto the hospitle

  5. Your Ok. You don’t need to take him to the hospital unless he isn’t breathing right, develops a fever, or starts swelling. You know him well, you will know if something is so off with him that he needs medical attention. I probably wouldn’t try the peaches again any time soon, though.
Oh, and the people who are telling you that you shouldn’t be feeding him solids yet are probably people who haven’t had babies in quite a while. If he can eat it, that’s awesome.
These people are idiots…don’t feel bad about asking other people for advice (even if we are internet users). That’s what first time mothers do. We ask for advice because we don’t know. I do it too.

  6. as a nurse in woman’s and children’s health care i must say shame on your ped for not following clinical based practice, and American pediatric assoc guild lines.. but it does sound like he’s had a slight reaction not necessarily a lifelong allergy reaction. do not introduce it again till he’s 1 yr old. if he seems to be breathing OK and you can keep him hydrated just wait it out or you could call your ped and ask his advise since he’s thumbing his nose on evidence based practice wake him up and let him problem solve this for you… also shame on you for pushing so much food on your baby, now quit being so miss know it all and do right by your baby

  7. you should call your doctor and ask and yes, you need a new pediatrician. the allergic reactions are the very reason the child should have nothing but breastmilk for at least 6 months, hopefully longer. why on earth are you feeding him these things? stop it. it doesn’t help him sleep through the night.
    have him sleep with you.

  8. call the hospital they will tell you what to do and they are a lot more reliable than a bunch of internet users.

  9. The most severe form of an allergic reaction is anaphylaxis. If your son is having troubles breathing, seek medical attention immediately!!! It sound like what you are describing are hives. I would just stop feeding him the food that caused it (if your sure it was the food, and not a change in soap, diapers, etc). and call your pediatrician in the morning. Good luck to you!!

  10. Call your pediatritian NOW…they have someone on call to take your call. They will direct you to your doctor, or find a suitable doctor that can help you over the phone. They will give you the best advice..ok? If you are from the USA, then the hospital won’t give you information over the phone, you would have to take him in to be seen. Since your pediatrician knows about your child’s history, he would be more apt to give you advice over the phone.

  11. hey there, calm down mom. i apologize for peoples ill will, i assume most of the *** holes aren’t even parents. first off, he probably just needs a little benadryl, second hives wont kill him, just watch closely for any breathing issues. call the advice nurse or the pediatrician because you can probably give benadryl according to weight at home. my son is also 5 months and has been eating solids for more than a month, the doctor said i should because he is bigger than the norm and has 2 teeth already. you are not a bad mom, don’t listen to these clowns. calm down though because your baby is very tuned into you and if you freak out or are under distress it will pass to the baby and a stressed out baby with hives is all bad. good luck, and no more peaches

  12. food allerigies not extremely common but they are there is he running a fever then i would take him in. prunes might have given him the diarrihae( not sure on spelling either). About the bumps its not chickenpox is it? but i would consult a pharmicist or your pediatrcian…

  13. Take him to the doctor. Sounds like he’s broken out in hives.

  14. Get the child into emergency NOW. Don’t wait for things to get better on their own, because they probably won’t.

  15. I honestly do not know, but you should call your local hosptial and ask to speak with a nurse or doctor! They would have experience with this type of thing! Good luck!

  16. Call a hospital nurse and see if you can give him benadryl liquid. Tell her about the symtoms.

  17. an allergy like that isn’t common i would take him to the doctor to see whats going on. But dont be allarmed my son gets those symptoms from oranges so its propably fine, but just incase i’d have him checked out. And for all the people dissing you for use of solids I am from Australia and research here says babies should be fed solids from 3-6 months, so don’t worry about them.Good luck

  18. I would wait a couple more hours and if the bumps don’t go away, make an appointment with his doctor. I’m sure it’s nothing serious, but there’s no harm in getting it checked out. In the meantime, keep his skin moisturized with non-scented or colored lotion. Simple baby lotion will do fine. Hope this helps!

  19. Actually, 5 months or 6 months is fine for solid foods. I wouldn’t worry unless he’s running a fever, and can’t sleep. If that’s the case get him to the ER. But it sounds fine, and he’s resting now, so now you know that he seems to be allergic to Peaches. Sometimes, babies have to adjust to a new diet, my babies threw up similac, and isomil, when I tried to stop breastfeeding. So a little rash , while scary to a new mom, isn’t life threatening. Fevers are, as well as inability to sleep. When he wakes up, give him water, with a drop of Karo syrup.(Clear). This will help flush his system.
And PLEASE!!! Don’t listen to Alex. She just used her baby as a prank. She said her baby was choking and couldn’t breathe. People said call 911. It was in poor taste.
She isn’t in any position to give any type of advice to a new mother.

  20. Signs & symptoms of an allergic reaction are different from person to person. Shortness of breath and wheezing are the primary concerns. Are his breaths short & rapid? Put your ear to his back. Do you hear wheezing or rattles in his lungs? Does he have an elevated temperature? Does he have a cough? Is it a tight, wheezy cough or a loose cough? If all three are present, he may have pneumonia & not allergies. Sometimes, there is a close paralell between the two & it’s hard to tell. Clear nasal drainage is another sign of an allergy. Don’t be afraid to call the pediatrician at home–ever. When in doubt, call them. Put all of your child’s symptoms on paper before you call. Count how many times he breathes in and out-in & out is one breath. Count for one minute, this is his respirations. Stay calm & in control. Now–go check on your so & write down his symptoms for the Dr so he can get the whole story. In children, feeding them too early can actually cause allergies. My kids started with yellow veggies, than greens a couple weeks later. Fruits later. If you follow these rules, you can determine what food allergies he may have & to what type of food. Ok–no lecture. Just don’t rush it. Hope this info helps.

  21. It is just an allergic reaction. If he has trouble breathing, you’ll need to take him in, otherwise not. I would call an advise nurse hotline for your pediatrician, you may be able to give a small dose of benedryl, but probably they’d have you use a topical cream. This happens to every new mom, and some of us old ones too!!! You are a good mom who obviously loves her baby. Hang in there hun, you’re doing fine.

  22. He should be ok…but I would definately keep an eye on him…check his breathing, and make sure it stays regular…if it changes, then I would take him to the ER. The little bumps may be from the diarhea he had/has….try to put some A & D ointment on it, with medicated powders on top of the A & D ointment….the dr. told me to do that with my first child, b/c she would get bad rashes when she would get new teeth in..and I do it with my 2nd daughter now…and she really hasn’t had a rash yet…and she is 13 months old now.
So…your son should be fine…just try not to feed him any peaches anymore…try to stick with certain one’s that you know he is fine with…then when he gets a little older, try new things.
    I hope he gets better!
    Good Luck! :o )

  23. If it’s really an allergic reaction, he needs more help than you can give, CALL 911.

  24. Just keep watching him. Chances are he had a reaction to the peaches, but as long as he isnt having any problems breathing..hes fine. All babies get a rash at some point in their little lifes. And the only way to be sure it was the peaches..dont feed him any for a couple days and then try again, IF he breaks out again then it was the peaches.

  25. most likely he’ll be fine because serious reactions usually occur within 15 min. By serious I mean life threatining. When ever in doubt call the dr. that is what they are there for. Good luck.

  26. what the f!!! are you doing asking us take the baby to the ER

  27. I hope someone takes your child from you.

  28. Wait a little while it doesn’t sound like he’s in danger, but if he doesn’t get any better in the next hour I would take him to the hospital. Don’t freak out! It sound like he’s ok. But you have to be on the safe side.

  29. a rash or bumps can mean your baby is having an allergic reaction. reactions can be mild to severe. his breathing is important for you to watch. keeping his electrolytes up is important, give him liquids. you need to call your doctor when there office opens up and let them know. they will be able to tell you if you need to let them see him. if your son starts vomiting, running fever, and his diarrhia gets worse you need to take him to the hospital. if he has trouble breathing you need to call 911. hope he gets to feeling better.

  30. Food allergies are not uncommon in an infant that young. Wait a while before you give him peaces again. If he is not uncomfortable don’t worry, kids are resilient. Just watch him, you know your child better than anyone if you feel it necessary take him to be looked at. It can be something unrelated. I have two kids 13 and 9. When they don’t talk you have to have a gutt feeling and follow it.

  31. First of all the American Academy of Pediatricians recommand starting solids at 4-6 months. So you have no reason to doubt yourself for feeding your child solids.
Secondly his symptoms do sound like a food allergy. Since he is having no other symptoms just continue to monitor him. If he begins to show additional symptoms especially if he begins having difficulty breathing than take him into the ER. If he doesn’t than just contact your pediatrician tomorrow.
