Infant Parents: How Many Diapers Do You Go Through Each Month?

Try to figure out our budget for after the baby arrives…
How many diapers do you use per month? How much do you spend on diapers and wipes each month? Are there any other expenses (other than formula-I’m planning to breastfeed)?
Any advice and information is greatly appreciated. Thanks! =]

  1. My daughter will be one month on Saturday (I can not believe how quickly time has gone by) and we have almost gone through about two boxes of diapers from Costco ( 30.00 for 216 diapers). I probably have like 50 diapers left. And we still have tons of wipes (15.00 for 700 also Costco). I’m breastfeeding and she has a bowel movement basically every single diaper so there are ALOT of diaper changes. Congrats on the baby!

  2. I spend between $50-60 a month on diapers/wipes. My son goes through about 4-5 a day. Baby food is an expense, once your little one is eating solids (You can still breastfeed when they’re eating baby food). I think I spend anywhere between $15-20 a month for baby food. You’ll most likely have to buy clothes every month too, since your baby will grow SO much and SO fast right away. That expense can vary depending on where you shop. I’m a thrifty shopper, so I think I spend about $40-50 a month on clothes… and that’s only in the months when my son NEEDS clothes. As far as other things, (ie baby wash, shampoo, lotion, etc) you will not have to buy them every month. Maybe every 3 months.

They make diapers in convenient packs that seem to last about 6-7 days. Size 1 has like 54 diapers (I cannot remember the actual amount) and size 2 has 48 diapers and size 3 has 40 diapers. They use less as they get older. I just buy the regular size pack of Parent’s Choice (wal-mart brand-love them!) and it has always lasted about a week no matte the size my girls were/are wearing. They cost $5/pack so about $20/month on diapers. A Huggies wipe container will last me 2 weeks so about $6/month and I also use a warm wash cloth for diaper changes at home so it’s actaully even less than that. You can buy the big cases of diapers as it is more cost effective but in the beginning they grow so fast it seems like a lot of those small sizes go to waste. Around 6 months you will have a baby food exepense but it’s relatively inexpensive about $0.50 per jar, 2 jars per day so less than $10/week, I make my own so it’s very cheap. Hope this helps!

At the beginning I breastfed as well then something happened and I couldn’t so we went to powdered formula. We would buy the initial can and inside that can (similac with digest ease) we found a coupon to save $5 on the next can. We would continue to do that each time so we never paid full price for a can of formula. Same thing with the diapers (coupon). We go through about 6 diapers/day on average so I guess in a month…180-190 diapers. We also bought a ton of liners one day because they were on sale for $3.79 instead of $9.99 and that saved a great deal of money. I think the most expensive is formula and wipes…boy do we go through alot of those wipes. If you do go the formula way…do what we did and it helps alot. Cameron would go through 1 can a week before and they are $28.00/can.

  5. Early on I went through about 10-12 diapers a day. By the second month we were down to 8-10 and now at three months we probably use 6-8 a day. There are 40 diapers in the N size of pampers (in Canada) for $15 but I usually find them on sale. That’s about $30-40 per week to start off. I bought some cloth diapers to use while we are at home and it cuts back on how many disposables I have to buy. I use Apple Cheeks. You can look at them online at applecheeks.ca. We were given a big Costco box size of wipes when he was born and at three months we are just finishing them up.
Extra expenses: car seat, clothes for baby, nursing bra or tops for you, stroller or wrap to carry baby in.

  6. Diapers for a newborn you use anywhere around 10-12 a day, maybe more maybe less.
We went to Sams Club and got a jumbo box of diapers and my son outgrew them before we got to use them. So if I were you, for the first few months don’t go too crazy buying diapers, or if you do keep your receipts!
Wipes, that all depends as well. I buy those in bulk. I find myself using them not only for pee and poop… but also drool, and quick wipe downs of his body. Never hurts to buy bulk on those, just make sure you’ve tried out a smaller version beforhand, so you know if they have an alergy to it or not.
Sometimes breastfeeding doesn’t work out… so in the begining I would have some money set aside IF you needed to buy formula.
Other expenses: Daycare, Doctor’s visit co-pays, the added dependent cost on health insurance… all I can think of for right now

  7. im guessing u r planning on using disposable nappies i got through bout 6-8 a day now my son is 11 weeks old i go through a pkt huggies infant nappies a weeks and there are 48 in a pkt wipes maybe 1 pkt every couple of days it depends on how you use them trying to think of other expenses depends on the baby really u might need wind drops or colic relief (i don’t need these thins so don’t know how much they cost) im still using the same shampoo and bath soaps i opened when we brought bub home. lansinoh cream its really good for sore nipples i needed some in the first few days of breastfeeding but haven’t needed it since but its worth getting. breastmilk storage bags if you are planing on expressing not really sure of the price are you planning on washing bubs clothes spereatly if so you will need that stuff. thats all i can think of

  8. diapers: My baby went through at least 3-4 boxes when he was a newborn (about $20 each) and now he goes through like 2-3 a month
breast feeding: you might want to purchase a pump (about $10-$100+ depending on the brand) so you can store the milk
wipies: they’re about $5-$10 depending on the brand

  9. i go through about 150-200 a month.with wipes i only need maybe 1 box a month.it would be cheaper to buy diapers and wipes in boxes, personally i prefer luvs, their pretty cheap and ive never had a leak with them.pampers wipes are pretty good too.

  10. Nothing Personal :] on November 26th, 2009 at 9:03 am

well right now they are 6 months but when they were first born, we would buy one of those big packs of diapers at sams and they would easily go through 2 of those every month. more or less. but then again i do have two twin girls. :]

  11. well, I change my son 4-5 times a day, so it adds up to at least 150 diapers a month. I buy in bulk though, so the economy boxes usually keep us all set for the month
