Is It Normal For Newborn Puppies To Not Have The Initial Weight Drop Most Puppies Have A Few Days After Birth?

My foster dog had her puppies 4 days ago via c-section, and I’ve been weighing them daily like the vet told me to on an infant scale. He said to expect a weight drop of a few ounces for the first few days, and then they’ll start to gain weight. Since the second day they haven’t lost an oz, in fact they gain weight daily. Is that also normal?

  1. I wouldn’t be worried that they haven’t lost weight, in fact, I think its kudos to you (and their mum) for looking after them well! The weight drop that is generally seen is due to their new environment, and all the new allergens they’re exposed to (this is also the reason that the mother’s first milk is so important for their health). Weight loss may also occur due to the ‘exercise’ the pups get moving around outside the womb, plus the energy they expend to regulate temperature since they haven’t had to before. So hopefully the reason the pups haven’t lost weight, is because their immune systems and digestive tracts are working well!

  2. Yeah thats great! Some puppies do loose weight because the food change(from tummy to milk) Your very nice to take care of them!

  3. Normal? No.
    Good news? Yes.
