Mothers Have Any Of You Ever Gotten Wic (women Infant Children)? Do You Think This Is A Good Program?
I do. Especially when your child is a baby. Baby formula is very expensive. This program is great. It helps with milk and cereal.

I haven’t personally but I know some people who has it and yes it is a very good program. Not only do they give you formula but also cereals, cheese, milk and other necessities.
Yes I have WIC and its great…They pay for your formula and cereal and when your baby gets older..pays for juices, milk, peanut butter same as it does when ur pregnant
I got WIC for my son’s first year. It was a big help financially. Maybe I’m odd, but I also appreciated visiting with the nutritionists and nurses. Valuable information and free.
Yes I am on wic.I love it.I think it is a great program. It helps with a lot.I love getting milk, being pregnant & all.I go through it like crazy.I disagree with the lady who says that they dont promote breastfeeding & that if they didnt give formula, more women would breastfeed.Every woman is going to make that choice regardless of whether she gets it free or not.And they do promote breastfeeding in my area.I still chose not to do it.I will still not do it even if I didnt get formula free.Anyways why does it matter to you how another woman feeds her child.:D I’m not trying to be ugly.I am just wondering.
Yes it is a great program. They also give you alot of info.on other things you may need help with. You can recieve WIC from the time you are pregnant until child is age 5.
I did with my first child, and yes it is great. Who wouldn’t turn down free formula? I wish they gave it to everyone though. If you make so much as one dollar above there guidlines you are out of luck!
I think the program is good. I’m glad there seems to be more nutritious options on the program (the Farmers Market nutrition program). For the record, I do not get WIC, but my family was on it when my brother and sister were babies. So my experience with them comes from almost 20 years ago.
(sigh) It makes me sad when other people come on here and say “if someone can’t afford formula or afford nutrition while pregnant – they shouldn’t have babies!” So…..what are they supposed to do? Have abortions?
I do believe there should be breastfeeding support and information through WIC. Even free pumps. And it would be wonderful for people who are on it to be able to get free visits from a lactation consultant. But you cannot FORCE someone to breastfeed, even if they are (gasp!) low income. Many of the women on WIC have to go back to work after having their babies. They are not all sitting around collecting from the government ala “the welfare queen” myth. I think people confuse WIC & welfare in that aspect. And while it would be nice for everyone to have a good job with a nice area to pump (or hell, even a non public bathroom), that’s not always the case. Formula is provided so babies can get nutrition. And I don’t know about you, Rain, but I’d rather the formula be there for the babies that need it and let those families use the tiny bit extra to be able to pay an electric bill or keep the heat on.
But, you know, that’s just me.
It’s a great program. Formula can cost up to $200 a month for people like me who CAN’T breast feed. And I just don’t have $200 to spend each month. And I go through so much milk with 3 kids and my husband and at almost $5 a gallon milk prices keep rising. It is very helpful!! and it’s nothing to feel bad about either.
yes i was on it all u gota do is go down there wait a little bit and they give free formila that day untill the baby is 12 months then they give u free milk eggs cheese and other things i could of never made it without it its like 65 dollers a week so its a good thing trust me
I have a friend that does. I think it’s a fantastic program!
Yes, I get WIC. It is great! Though there is a picture on the food packet of a mother breastfeeding her 6 or 7 year old. I am not exaggerating. That is disgusting.
I think its great!
I was on it when breastfeeding was unsuccessful and I couldn’t afford formula for my baby daughter. I got off of it when she turned 1 year because I could afford her milk. I think it is WONDERFUL for those who need it. I like that you have a monthly appointment. It’s not just all freebie handouts that people take advantage of. It does take some effort.
I got WIC w/both of my children and I believe they are a wonderful program. Not only do they help out when times are tough but they help you pick the right foods and drinks for your children. Also having the classes every so many months helps mothers talk to other mothers and also the “teacher” helps you know when it is right to give your kids certain foods and drinks and how much and you can even get brochures and pamphlets to get you and your baby involved in programs and such.
RAIN: Just to let you know that yes WIC program helps mothers w/buying formula and such but I am currently on WIC for my son who is 3 months old. I breastfed for 3 weeks until I dried up and I was buying formula w/our income. My husband is in the Army and we get plenty of money to buy formula and such but my formula is $15/can and we get 9 cans off of WIC and I”m having to buy 1-2 cans myself b/c my son eats alot. But what WIC helps me with is extra money I can use to buy clothes, pay bills and other things for my precious kids. And just wanted to know when you said that mom’s who run out of checks for the month and use milk instead of formula..are you there when they do and see this right out or just a wild guess? Oh and another thing..WIC doesn’t really help out enough to make mom’s have more kids they don’t need..that would be DHS..DHS helps w/medical, daycare, food stamps and more…WIC helps w/the basic staples of formula, milk, cheese, cereal, juice, peanut butter, beans, eggs…the basic stuff that is really cheap (besides formula) to get w/digging change out of your couch.
I do not think that WIC is a good program. I agree that nutrition is important and appreciate that an effort is being made, but I don’t agree with it. If formula weren’t being provided subsidized, more moms would breast feed, creating a healthier mother and healthier baby. As far as babies are concerned, WIC provides infant cereals with aren’t necessarily desirable nor nutritious if the baby is getting a balanced diet. I see too many parents become irresponsible because of WIC. They have children that they can’t afford to take care of because WIC will help them. When formula checks run out during the month too many parents use milk rather than buying formula. Babies are fed infant cereals and infant juices not because they are needed, but because those companies want people to think that they are needed.
The idea of WIC in theory is great, but it doesn’t work and have the effect as planned. My personal belief is that if a parent can’t afford nutritious food during pregnancy, baby formula, and nutritious food for their children, they shouldn’t be having children. When parents have one child, they can often miss-guess the expense and needs, and that is fine. Too many parents have kids they can’t afford though, because WIC will help take care of them.
