Stored My Sons Infant Car Seat In Basement And I’m Using It Again, But It Has A Musty Smell?

I kept my sons infant car seat in my moms basement for over a year and dumb me didn’t put it in a bag or anything so it got all cob webby and has that musty smell to it. I’m using it again because I’m expecting another baby and just wanted to use the same car seat. I did wash the fabric and cleaned all the plastic parts, but the foam that is under the fabric still has a slight musty smell. Will it eventually go away? It won’t harm my baby will it.. it’s just a smell? I rinsed the entire car seat down in the shower and wiped what I could with clorox wipes. You can really only smell it when you put your face right up to the car seat.

  1. Its fine to leave it outside for a while.. as long as its not raining or snowing.. I dont think it will harm the baby unless there are mold presents. But just wash it a few times then let it outside.

  2. I'm so crafty, I make people on February 28th, 2010 at 9:07 pm

it could be mold and in that case, i wouldn’t use it. many molds are toxic and can be toxic by breathing them in. bleach would be the only way to rid the foam of it, but i’m not sure if that would break down the foam. it’s probably best to call the company to make sure.

  3. I would take the cover off (because its already clean) and sprinkle baking soda on the foam, leave it for a day or two then vacuum it off. If needed, repeat. Baking soda won’t hurt the baby, won’t hurt the foam, and is great at getting odors out.

I think the smell will go away now that you’ve got it out in an area that has air circulating. It may take a little while if you can’t sit it outside for a couple of days, but it should eventually.

  5. i would wash the fabric again. (just because it wasn’t covered and while your washing the fabric spray the foam with fabreez let it air out for a day or 2 then do again the smell will some out :)

  6. If the weather’s not too bad I’d stick it outside for a day or so in the fresh air. That’s the best way I’ve found to get rid of a musty smell.
Edited: Cold isn’t a problem, as long as it’s dry.

  7. Use Febreze Extra Strength, it works wonders. It took the musty smell right out of a carpet. It just freshens things right up. I use it all the time!! Hope this helps!

  8. because it was in the basement for a year uncovered i would not use it in case it was mold! i would just buy another cheap care seat wal mart has some

Use something like Febreeze or take off the car seat cover.
