When Did Your Babies Change From A Crib To A Bed?

I just found out that I’m pregnant with my second child. My son is only 14 months and is, of course, still in his crib. He’ll be 23 months when this baby is born and I think that is still too young to be in a toddler bed, isn’t it? Should we just buy another crib? Anyone else in this situation?
Thanks.

  1. My son went to a toddler bed at a little over one maybe 14months. He was tall enough that when he’d jump in the crib he could easily flip out. So I think it should be a size issue more so than age. Just as long as they are safe.

  2. he will be old enough soon
most babies go from crib to tot bed when they are able to climb from the crib
climbing over a high rail of a crib is much more dangerous than falling out of a tot bed
my daughter switched at 18 mos when she started trying to get out of the crib
the average age is about 18 mos
it will be fine to go ahead and get a regular twin bed and get detachable rails or spend the money on a tot bed
if you are really worried about him falling out then put padding beside the bed for him to fall onto
my daughter had a giant teddy bear to land on which worked fine the couple of times she fell out of the tot bed

  3. 23 months is the perfect age to get them into a toddler bed, but before you even do that make them STOKED that they will get to have a toddler bed!! How he’ll be just like mommy and daddy. Have him go and pick out the bed that he’s going to be sleeping in, that way he will get more attached to it. Have him ‘help’ put it together. Our DD was 22 months when she got her toddler bed for christmas and she loved it… at first, but then they get out and it’s a whole other issue, but it’s necessary for their development.

  4. My twin girls switched at about 26 months. I had started potty training them and it was too difficult to change the sheets in the crib. They transitioned to their “big girl beds” pretty easily.
Have you thought about keeping the new baby in a bassinet or Pack ‘N Play for the first few months to buy you some more time with the transition to a big boy bed? That way you wouldn’t have the added expense of a crib. Just a thought…

  5. My two girls are 22 months apart. Currently #2 has been in a play pen crib in our room, but we just started transitioning our 2 1/2 year old to bed and its going well. She is a good sleeper and a good listener, but she has enjoyed the switch. She feels “big”! Just make sure to put a lock on the outside of his door or put a gate across his door and baby proof everything in his room.

  6. I’ve never used cribs. Call me old fashion or just plain dumb, but I always had them sleep in bed with me, since their father was always n night shift or always being called in to work. Around their second-third birthday they just decided to want a bad that they saw at this baby store and they did pretty well.
Have the kids, if their is more than one, sleep together in a larger bed first and then move them apart.

  7. mine went in when they were two,
i put a stair gate across there bedroom door so they couldn’t come downstairs ! Babies can be so funny sometimes.
use the crib again when your new baby is born and buy a bed for your other little one.
Good luck with the new baby
    xx

  8. My son began to climb out of his crib at around 14 months! I had to put him in a toddler bed for safety’s sake. I was afraid he’d fall and break something. I don’t think 23 months is too young for a toddler bed at all, he’ll be almost two!

  9. It's a boy ♥5/4/10♥ on February 7th, 2010 at 1:49 pm

Both of my boys got new big boy beds on their 2nd birthdays!
They were kinda upset to leave their crib, but I let them pick out their new bedding sets for their beds!! Viola!!
They absolutely loved sleeping in their new big boy Spongebob beds!

  10. my friends kids got their own beds when they were 1 years old they love to sleep in their beds. they are not even scared
