  1. There are many factors that must be considered here. The mothers age, health, sexual history, family history for diseases and disorders are all things that must be investigated. The main, outstanding factor in this situation is the mother’s age. An older mother has a greater risk of conceiving a baby with Trisomy 21 or down syndrome, and some other neurological defects (spina bifida). Other procedures include screening for STD’s and whether the mother is a carrier of specific genes that cause conditions like Cystic Fibrosis (if she or the father has a family history). There are also many questions that must be asked to determine the status of maternal health (obesity, hypertension, smoking, drinking, etc.) Finally, the first ultra sound (usually internal) is performed to examine the developing fetus and check for placenta abnormalities and such.
It is important to determine the status of a fetus prenatally because it greatly increases the chances of having a healthy pregnancy and delivery if any underlying conditions are ruled out or discovered. These measures also determine the viability and health of the pregnancy. If the fetus will not thrive, then the pregnancy can be terminated early enough to prevent maternal harm.
    Hope this helps!

  2. Sounds like a homework question.
If you want a healthy baby to be born, you need to catch any problems it might be having as it develops, so you can treat them. One maternal factor that might raise concern is diabetes. Family factors would be genetic diseases that you’d want to screen for.
That’s a start for you. It’s probably not a full answer, and I may not have given the best points. Your textbook will have those.

I love when people post homework questions on here, and phrase them just as they are written on the paper.

You need to make sure the fetus is viable (at any age), if there are problems it can lead to a major infection!

  5. Please do your own homework. Thank you.
