Have You Heard Anything About Airing Diapers Out Before Using Them?

I read something a while ago about letting diapers air out of the package so the fragrance goes away and the chlorine releases before you use them. I bought a package of dye free organic cotton diapers and they are super expensive. I dont like the fragrance b/c it always gives me a headache when I open the pack so I can imagine what it does to the baby.
So have you heard anything about airing them out first?

  1. I have never heard this but I suppose it makes sense.
They make disposable diapers that are chlorine-free if you want to use a disposable w/o chlorine, I believe they are corn based (the ones I’m trying right now are anyway). Not sure they are all that much better but every little bit helps, I suppose. The price is equivalent to Huggies or Pampers.
ETA: I sure don’t but I will look (when I get home) to see what they are called and try to find a link. I know they are called Natural (something?). I bought them at HEB in Texas. I will try to remember to edit this tomorrow.
………. I wasn’t able to find a direct link in English (here’s their site though: http://www.absormex.com.mx/). They may be sold under different names but the manufacturer is Absormex (S.A., Monterrey, Mexico).
Here’s a neat site that I did come across: http://www.disposablediaper.net/default.…

  2. I tried letting my pampers air out, that smell is just so bad, airing them out didn’t help much. Whole foods 365 diapers and Seventh Generation are good and not perfumed. We use cloth now (bumGenius) and are very happy with them.

I haven’t heard it about diapers in particular, but I try to air out anything smelly before I bring it into the house. Perfumes and plastic fumes are nasty chemicals.
Have you looked into cloth diapers? They’ve changed a lot since we wore them. I would not go back to disposables!
I used cloth during my husband’s deployment. It was actually easier for me. I hated driving to the Wal-Mart late at night because we were out of diapers, but another load of laundry was nothing. I actually started using cloth when my husband was in basic training and OCS. It really wasn’t a big deal, and I was diapering two babies then.
Have you considered G diapers? They sell them at WHole Foods. It’s a cloth diaper cover (the waterproof part) with a flushable absorbent liner. The price is comparable to brand-name disposables.
I can actually buy a brand of chlorine-free, fragrance-free disposables at my commissary–much cheaper than Whole Foods! You may be able to buy on commissary.com if you don’t live near a base right now.
